Pilot Ace successfully runs it first simple program- May 1950

Continued...

Pilot ACE was set to be an interesting , quirky , and in the event highly successful machine , still clearly based on Turning's original plans , with a significant speed advantage over its contemporaries and offering great opportunities for programming ingenuity.

The logical design for Pilot Ace, developed by the combined Electronics Section/Mathematics Division team in 1948, was in fact the 1947 Test Assembly plan with improvements.

The success of this demonstration forced a change in the laboratory attitude to Pilot ACE. The demonstration led to an immediate demand for computing services and it was therefore decided to make a few modification to the machine including the addition of a multiplier and then to use it to provide a computing service in parallel with the development of the larger machine.

The task given to Pilot ACE were entirely computational . They included the solution of ordinary differential equations by step-by-step methods , the solution of large sets of simultaneous equations, inversion of matrices and the determination of their latent roots, and numerical quadrature.
